This week's Faculty Spotlight features Dr. Kleier of the biology department whose dissertation was on "Functional Ecology, Ecophysiology, and Convergent Evolution of Dwarf Shrub and Cushion Plant Growth Forms" as a Ph.D. student at UCLA.
What's the first album you bought?
Bad Girls- Donna Summer
I think I was about ten. This is really an incredible album because Donna Summer has been nicknamed "the First Lady of Love," according to Wikipedia. What I love about this album is that it has elements of R and B, disco, electronic dance music, punk, and straight up Rock and Roll.
Who was your first concert?
My Dad took me to see Jefferson Starship when I was like 13 or so. What's amazing is this group is still touring. They played Hudson Gardens in Littleton this past June. Although "White Rabbit" was originally a Jefferson Airplane song, it's still the song I think of when I think of this band.
My first concert that I paid money to see was Billy Idol! My kid and I have dance parties to "Dancing with Myself" and "Rebel Yell." It's also amazing that Billy Idol is still touring!
Who is an artist you enjoyed listening to when you were in college?
This is a bit of a loaded question, since I've been in college for almost 20 years now.
Undergrad at CU Boulder
Lou Reed; REM; The Clash; Phish; Led Zeppelin; Reggae; The Grateful Dead
M.S. at Oregon State
More Jam Bands, but also Bluegrass
Ph.D. at UCLA
Okay, I was a bit late to the punk scene, but there were some good surf rock/punk bands floating around LA at the time in the late 90s, and I was listening to a lot of local music like Third Grade Teacher and The Negro Problem among others.
Do you play any instruments?
So, I played the flute in high school, but haven't picked it up much since then. I do like St. Germain, though, but not so much Jethro Tull.
Song You Can't Not Sing Along to/Go to Karaoke Song
Go to karaoke song that I can't actually sing is "Jackson" by June and Johnny Cash. I just love that as a karaoke song! If I have to sing, it will probably be "Dead Flowers" or "Beast of Burden" by the Rolling Stones. If it's a group sing along, then it has to be "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey.
Odious Song/Artist You Just Can't Stand
I'm not an Adele hater. She has a great voice, and I love "Rumor Has It," but I have to change the channel every time "Hello," comes on. I think that it's just too melancholy for me.
(Suggested by Dr. Kleier) What do you listen to now?
I love Electronic Dance Music!!! My favorites are Above and Beyond, Gareth Emery, and more mainstream like The Chainsmokers, Disclosure, and Kygo. I also love STS9, which is probably more Jamtronic, but their latest album has vocals and is reminiscent of Daft Punk.
One year I will go to Ibiza, and dance for a whole week straight- maybe as part of my next sabbatical.
