One such ray of sunshine is Widowers. Started by Mike Marchant as a solo project, Widowers has grown to a five piece with Marchant doing vocals, guitar, synths, programming, Mark Shusterman on piano and synth vocals, Mark Weaver slappin da bass, Cory Brown taking care of drums, percussion, programming, synth and production, Brian Marcus playing guitar and Crawford Philleo on vibraphone and vocals. The band cites current bands such as Wilco, Animal Collective, and the Flaming Lips as well as older greats like Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and the Beach Boys.

Widowers' sound is distinctive, with properties that offer a sound of lucidity that only the combo of sleepy rock and dreamy pop could provide. Lead singer Mike Marchant's vocal stylings are often likened to that of Julian Casablancas of the Strokes fame. Ms Angora Holly Polo of the Donnybrook Writing Academy made such a comparison while adding in that the sound is "way more earnest - like somebody smacked that jaded smirk off Julian Casablancas' face and made him go hop trains and live off the land for a year."

Great stuff. At the moment, I'm hard pressed to find any decent recordings of this awesome bands live. So in the meantime, head over the band's myspace page and give em a listen.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.krcx.org/music-blog/2009/10/21/le-loup-interview.html"><rss:title>Le Loup Interview</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.krcx.org/music-blog/2009/10/21/le-loup-interview.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>
Le Loup came through town on Monday to perform a set at the hi-dive.
These days, when I'm lookin to do a little soothin' of the soul, my thumb nearly always manages to find Cotton Jones in my iPod. Mike Nau and Whitney McGraw, who together form Cotton Jones, create a dreamlike state through their music that invokes images of the creeks running through Appalachians in their home state of Maryland. Or maybe something less specific. But the music no doubt brings on a general feeling of peace and quiet.

After a few months of keeping them all to myself, I've finally seen the duo earn their due acknowledgement. After playing this year's Monolith Festival, they've received some pretty rave reviews. After being featured by her in a Monday Music Roundup back in March, Miss Browne over at I am fuel, you are friends gave them some love after Monolith and completely agreed, Cotton Jones is great! They are also currently a featured artist at Gigbot.

"Time to Die" keeps with the Dodos trend of a simple combination of instruments with complex rhythms. The first single from the album, "Fables," is easy to tap your toe and bob your head to. "Troll Nacht" is another stand out from the album with a similarly easy-going and uplifting sound, but at the same time more wistful sounding vocals.

For all these reasons, the Young Coyotes were named Best New Band of 2009 by Westword . The catchy beats and great lyrics have ensured that the Young Coyotes have a loyal following in the Denver music scene. Just see for yourself. The Young Coyotes will be returning from a summer long hiatus this Sunday with a show at the Larimer Lounge (21+). If you're under 21 and without false identification, the below youtube video is all you get.
